The Three Engines That Keep a Marriage Alive

Closeness, shared effort and desire feed one another. See which one has been left without care.

A marriage can look busy and stable while something important is running low. You can be excellent at keeping life going and still wonder where the two of you went. Three parts of the relationship are worth looking at separately.

Bond

This is the sense that you are emotionally safe with each other: warmth, repair after conflict, small signs that the other person is on your side. When it weakens, even a neutral comment can sound like a threat.

Effort

This is the work of carrying a life together and making that work visible. A lopsided load can turn care into exhaustion. A partner who feels unseen may stop offering freely even while the household still functions.

Desire

This is aliveness between two people: play, attraction, individuality and the feeling of being chosen. It cannot be demanded into existence. It can be crowded out by pressure, resentment and a life with no room to meet as partners.

Where to begin

The three affect each other. Weak effort can erode bond; a fragile bond can make touch feel risky; fading desire can be read as another rejection. Ask which part has been injured in daily life and begin there. A grand romantic gesture will struggle to land while one person is afraid to speak or carrying an unfair share of the home.
