When They Stayed, But You Still Feel Unchosen
They are still here, yet their daily coldness can make you feel as though you were only tolerated.
They stayed. You may feel guilty that this is not enough to make you feel secure. Everyone else sees an intact marriage; you know how carefully you choose your words when they come into the room.
Their reasons for staying could be complicated. They may still hope, feel obliged, need time or be unsure how to come back after hurt. You cannot decide which from a cold evening. You can describe what their behaviour is like to live beside.
Name the experience without inventing the motive
Try naming the experience without claiming to know their motive: “I am glad we are still here. I also feel as though you regret being here with me most days.” Ask what they are able to choose now and what remains unresolved. Listen to the answer, including if it is painful.
Ordinary respect is not too much to ask
You should not have to earn ordinary respect by asking for less and less. If their staying is accompanied by humiliation, threats or control, this is a safety problem. If goodwill remains, the next question is whether both of you can turn a decision to remain into a way of living together that no longer punishes either person.
