When Calm Looks Like Apathy
One of you reads calm as closeness. The other needs a real conversation before the room feels peaceful.
Two different signs of peace
The fight ends. Your partner makes dinner and sits beside you. They think the two of you are finding your way back. You are still waiting for them to mention the hurt.
For some people, returning to ordinary life is an offering: we can be together again. For others it feels like the subject was walked around. You can both be making a bid and missing the other person’s entirely.
Agree on what coming back looks like
Ask what would make the return believable. Perhaps you need one acknowledgement before relaxing. Perhaps they need a shorter conversation with a clear stopping point, so they are not afraid that every quiet evening will become a long review.
Calm by itself will not repair an injury that keeps being skipped. Repeated discussion by itself will not create closeness if the other person never gets to breathe. Tell each other what you count as coming back, and check that both of you can recognise it.
