Stuck-fight reset
Find what the stuck fight is protecting
The same issue returns, and every new proposal sounds like another way for one person to lose. Put the bargain down for tonight. Ask what the position is protecting.
Before you start
Make sure this fits the moment
- Best used when
- The same issue keeps returning, there is still enough goodwill to be curious, and neither person is being pressured to surrender a non-negotiable.
- Not for
- Abuse, intimidation, active addiction, betrayal or deception, child-safety questions, or genuinely incompatible life decisions. Those are not communication puzzles.
Take it in order
The repair
- 01
Stop negotiating for tonight
Agree that this short conversation will not end in a decision. If a deadline makes that impossible, use a decision or support process instead of this Repair.
- 02
Do your own first pass
Write three lines: the issue on the surface; what your position protects; what you fear losing if you give way. You can do this even if your partner will not join.
- 03
Invite their account without bargaining
If they are willing, ask what their position protects. Say back the part you understand before you correct anything. If they decline, stop pushing.
- 04
Choose the next kind of work
Is there a practical piece you can decide separately, a difference you may need to manage, or a possible deal-breaker you may need help thinking through? Name which one; do not try to finish it tonight.
Change the words to sound like you
A line to borrow if you need one
Get beneath the bargain
“I think we keep bargaining over the decision and missing what it protects for each of us. Mine is about ____. If you are willing, what is yours?”
When they do not want this conversation
“Okay. I will not keep pressing tonight. I will take some time and think about what I need to do next.”
Watch-outs
What will make this worse
- Do not collect their deeper answer as leverage for the next round.
- Understanding a position does not make every demand reasonable or every compromise safe.
- Do not rename a real non-negotiable as fear that somebody should overcome.
- Keep sex, money, parenting, family history, and the future of the marriage from all joining this one sitting.
