Conflict, drift and repair

How You Fight Is Not the Whole Story

A quiet couple can be drifting. A louder couple can still repair. Watch what happens after disagreement.

The couple next door may argue loudly and be back in each other’s company an hour later. Another couple never raises a voice and has not spoken honestly about money in years. Counting fights misses the part that matters.

Can you disagree without contempt or fear? Does either person notice when the conversation is going badly and try to slow it? Does the person who needs a break come back? A marriage can carry difference if both people remain reachable and repair is more than a temporary ceasefire.

Constant criticism, counterattack, shutdown and growing loneliness deserve attention however quietly they happen. So does anger that becomes intimidating. No “conflict style” explains away harm.

Ask what your disagreements leave behind. More understanding, or another subject nobody can safely raise? That answer tells you more about the stability of the bond than the volume of the argument.

Stability is visible after the disagreement: somebody notices the injury, an apology leads to changed conduct and the subject can be raised again without fear.

A low-volume house is not necessarily a peaceful one. Avoidance can keep the decibels down while important parts of the marriage become unspeakable.
