Start with the pattern

Is This an Effort Gap or Something More Serious?

Unequal effort calls for a different response from contempt, fear or control. Check what is happening before trying a couple exercise.

Look at the ordinary pattern first

Do you both still care about improving things, even though one raises concerns more often and the other wants the talk to stop? Can each of you disagree and still be treated with respect? An effort gap can be painful without closing the door to repair.

If goodwill is going

Take the situation more seriously if apologies only end the argument, one partner’s pain is routinely mocked, or neither person believes a change is worth trying. A better script cannot replace willingness.

If speaking freely feels unsafe

Fear of retaliation, threats, humiliation, monitoring of your phone or money, pressure around sex, or punishment for raising concerns changes what help is appropriate. This is not a disagreement about communication styles or who does more chores.

You do not have to prove that the pattern is severe enough to seek support. If you cannot safely say no or speak honestly, begin with safety support instead of a joint effort exercise.
