Resentment and recommitment

Passive Staying or Active Recommitting?

Look at how you are staying now: by habit, by punishment, by respectful coexistence or by renewed choice.

Look at this week

The fact that neither person left says little about the state of the marriage. What is it like to live together now? Use these descriptions to name the pattern, not to score your spouse.

Passive staying

Life keeps running because changing it feels too costly. Difficult subjects are avoided, warmth is scarce and each of you assumes the other knows why. There may be little active cruelty, but there is little current choosing either.

Punishing staying

One person makes their sacrifice felt through contempt, coldness or repeated reminders of what they gave up. The other has to manage the mood of the home to avoid another reminder. That pattern needs to stop before a promise to “try” can mean much.

Respectful coexistence

Some couples are keeping a home steady while they work out what comes next. Honesty, care for children and basic respect can make that a responsible temporary choice. It should not become an indefinite cold war disguised as stability.

Active recommitment

Both people can name what has hurt and take responsibility for what they do now. There is some kindness even while trust or desire lags. You can point to changed behaviour, not just a declaration that you are still together. If you are unsure where you stand, ask which of these is visible in the ordinary week.
