Resentment and recommitment

Past Investment Is Not Current Repair Evidence

The years you have shared matter. To judge repair, look at what both of you are doing in the present.

“We have been together twenty years.” That is a life, not a small detail. The children, losses, work and private history deserve respect. It is painful even to imagine that all this effort might not tell you what to do next.

History can tell you why the marriage matters and why the decision is hard. It cannot tell you whether today’s contempt is easing, whether an apology has become changed behaviour, or whether you can disagree without fear.

Look for evidence in this week

Look for present evidence. Is each person willing to hear an uncomfortable truth? Does someone come back after a fight? Is the unfair load actually moving? Can warmth return in small ways without being demanded? You may find modest but real signs, or find that only the old promises are keeping the story alive.

Honour history with honesty

Staying for children, health or financial reasons may be responsible. The home still needs a livable atmosphere. Honour what was built by looking honestly at what is being built now.

Hope is not foolish, but it needs something present to attach to: a limit that is now respected, a responsibility that actually moved, a repair that was completed without being chased.
