Resentment and recommitment
When Resentment Becomes an Identity
A true injury can begin to organise every new day around the role of the person who was wronged.
Perhaps you have carried too much or stayed after a serious disappointment. Resentment can begin as an accurate signal that something has to change.
When the injury becomes the lens
It hardens when the injury becomes the position from which you read everything. A helpful act is too late. A missed one proves your case. The things you do for the family acquire a hidden invoice, and your spouse can feel that every bit of warmth will be measured against the past.
Letting the resentment soften does not mean the cost was imaginary. It means asking for the change you still need instead of collecting more proof that you are owed. The other person has to take real responsibility for the original imbalance or hurt; you cannot repair it alone by becoming pleasant.
Ask for present evidence
If you stay, you still have a choice about the atmosphere you help create. Name the injury, look for observable change and decide what you can honestly offer now. Living permanently as the one who sacrificed leaves very little room for either of you to be different.
The original grievance still needs an answer. The test is whether new evidence is allowed to count, or whether every present moment must be fitted back into the old verdict.
