Her perspective

When She Stops Mentioning Your Phone, It May Not Mean She's Fine

She stopped mentioning your phone. That could be peace, or it could mean she stopped expecting your attention.

She used to say something when you reached for the phone. Now she rolls over or picks up her own. The argument has ended. You may feel relieved.

Quiet can be resignation

Ask yourself whether she still reaches for you in those quiet gaps. A complaint can be tiring to hear, but it also means she expected you might respond. Silence could mean acceptance; it could also mean she has stopped making a bid that kept being missed.

If the phone helps you come down from work, tell her that and say when you will put it away. Do not make her guess whether “a minute” means five minutes or the whole evening. When you promise to return, return.

Come back before she stops reaching

You cannot infer her feelings from one silent night. Ask how the two of you have been using the time after work or before sleep. If she says she feels like she gets the last scraps of your attention, listen to the pattern she is describing before defending the phone.
