His perspective

When “Help More” Lands as “You Are Failing Me”

Her request for more help may hit a private fear that nothing you do counts. The shared work still needs doing.

She says, “I need more help.” You hear that all the things you already did have been erased. Before she can explain the actual problem, you are telling her what you handled last week.

Separate the work from the verdict

That defence may protect you from feeling inadequate, but it leaves her with the task, the planning and a new job of reassuring you. She may need more than a willing pair of hands. She may need to stop being the person who has to notice everything and hand out assignments.

Ask what she needs you to own. Not “How can I help?” as an offer that leaves her in charge, but a specific part of shared life you will see through. If dinner is yours twice a week, that includes the planning and clean-up. Agree what that looks like, then keep it.

Move a whole responsibility

She can acknowledge the effort you already make. You can hear a request without turning it into a verdict on your whole character. The test is whether, after the conversation, some real work has moved off her plate.
