His perspective
When His Calm Looks Like Indifference
He is still in the room and holding steady. The question is whether his calm remains connected to you.
You are upset. He is not matching your volume, your face or the speed of your words. His stillness can look like proof that the moment matters only to you.
“If this affects you, why can’t I see it?”
Regulation stays in the room
He may be doing active work: listening while his body heats up, slowing the answer that would add damage, and trying to remain present long enough to understand. Calm of this kind is not empty. It is load-bearing.
- He keeps facing the conversation instead of vanishing.
- He can reflect at least part of what you said.
- He asks for time without declaring the subject over.
- He returns when he said he would.
Contempt has a different signature
Eye-rolling, a superior smirk, deliberate minimising or a calm tone used to humiliate you are not regulation. Nor is a blank refusal ever to answer. The difference is not how dramatic he looks; it is whether his steadiness keeps contact possible.
Ask for one visible sign
You do not need him to perform your emotion. You can ask, “Are you still here with me, or would a short pause help?” His part is to make calm legible—with an acknowledgement, a return time or a clean answer—so you are not left trying to read a face.
