Her perspective
Why Practical Care Can Still Leave Her Feeling Unloved
Fixing the problem may be sincere care. She may still need to know that you see what it feels like for her.
The fix can be sincere
You sorted the bill, made the plan and handled the problem. She tells you she still feels alone. It is hard not to hear that as “none of what you do counts.” The work you did is real.
Think about the last time she came to you upset. Did she need a solution yet, or did she want you to stay with her in the feeling for a moment? If you go straight to fixing, she may have to set aside what she was trying to tell you in order to discuss your plan.
Ask what kind of care is needed
Ask what was hardest about her day. Listen to the answer before deciding what needs doing. She might want help with the problem next, and she might be relieved that you offered. She may also need you to remember the part that hurt.
This does not ask you to stop providing practical care or guess every need. It asks whether your care reaches the person you are doing it for. If she says she feels unseen, you can take that seriously without agreeing that your effort meant nothing.
