Timing and repair

Why repair attempts become another fight

A real concern can still turn into another fight when the timing, intention, or way it is raised makes it hard to hear.

Before you bring it up

If one of you is flooded, exhausted, defensive, half-asleep, or already spinning, even an honest concern can land as another blow. Pausing does not have to mean burying the issue. Say when you will return, and choose a time you can keep.

“You do not care” may contain real pain, but it also tells the other person who they are. Staying closer to what happened and what it did to you can make the same truth easier to hear without making it smaller.

Your reason for speaking matters too. If you are trying to punish, corner, unload, or prove a case, the sentence may still land like a verdict.

Words are only part of what arrives

Your words may say that you want to connect while your face, volume, or pace says “prepare for impact.” Tone and body state do not have to be perfect, but there must be room for the other person to respond or pause. No choice of words can make an unsafe conversation safe.
